The Super8 Reversal Lab is offering a video telecine service, and this price list is valid from 1 January 2012 (all prices are excluding 19% V.A.T.)..

Dear film maker. From 15 October 2012 I will stop offering the telecine service in SD and HD. This will give me more time that I will spend on my main activity and that is to develop film. That's where my analogue hart is.

General This service is also known as scanning. The word telecine is a combination of the words 'tele = distance' and the word 'cine = film'. So you can describe telecine as filming from a distance. And that's what you actually do when scanning and transferring films; you record [an existing piece of] film from a distance. During this telecine service your super8 film is being digitalized and copied to the [digital] video format you desire. You could also say from celluloid to magnetic tape. Our scanner records in the SD format (720x576 pixels), so even if you choose for DigiBeta you're file will still be in SD format. In principle is scanning of SD formats to DVcam the best choice, you will have captured all SD data onto a stable and long lasting carrier. We scan all films standard in 25 frames per second, and in consultation with the client we can change this.

Preparation When you send super8 or 8mm films for the telecine service you can send them either on the small 50ft reels, or use large reels, it does not matter. The laboratory will check all films on tape or cement splices, perforation damage, dust, splices and general state (shrink, drying, greece). After this films will be edited on large reels and cleaned. Cleaning is done with special film cleaning liquid and a cloth, and after this with PTR rollers [Particle Transfer Roller]. These rollers 'pull dust out of the film' and the result from this combined cleaning method is much better than standard cleaning alone. The preparation is calculated in labour time: 1 hour labour = Euro 42.00 excluding V.A.T..

Quality first All people handling you're film are film professionals and work with celluloid every day. The lab believes this service is for filmmakers and super8 enthusiasts that have a high quality standard. During the scanning we adjust light and colour scene by scene. You will receive a fully graded film on digital format from the first until the last frame. You can imagine that this is a labour intensive job. Our aim is quality and not quantity. That is one reason why we calculate in working hours and not in the original lenght of you're movie. All assignments should be confirmed by letter, fax or .

Cineco logoPartner This Telecine service is being offered with our partner Cineco Amsterdam. This great laboratory for full 16 and 35mm services is very well know. You might ask yourself why you should not go straight to Cineco for scanning your 8mm/super8 films? Well the answer to that question is easy, because it is cheaper for you as a costumer. This Super8 Reversal Lab does all the preparing and cleaning work and gives these large 'ready to scan' reels to Cineco. In this way you prevent handling and check-in costs. Because the Super8 Reversal Lab edits large reels and gives these to Cineco we save cost on the actual scanning time, this saves money again.

Formats Cineco can deliver almost any video or digital format you wish. If you need VHS, miniDV, DVcam, BetacamSP or DigitalBeta it is all possible. The production of DVD's is done with the Sonic Scenarist Professional authoring system in combination with the Bravo II DVD publisher. With the authoring software we can make, if you want, (moving) menus and chapters. The Bravo II DVD publisher can produce more DVD's in a short time with or without a image print on the DVD. You can give your own artwork or photo for this. Because of high quality standards the maximum film length that will be transferred onto DVD is 60 minutes. We think that this SD scan service is a very good price quality combination.

FTP From now on if you ask for a telecine of you're film to DVD, miniDV or DVcam you can ask for a free FTP download. In the end you will receive you're DVD or video tape at home but in the mean time you can download you're video files as data files (.VOB if you request a DVD and .MOV or .AVI when you request miniDV or DVcam) from the FTP server. This can save you time. This service is 'free of charge' and I can not give extended support on it. It's for those film makers who do not own a DVcam player for capturing but do know how to deal with computers. Finally I want to emphasize that the best SD telecine (720x576) is done to DVcam tapes because they are proven to last a long time.

MWA logoFlashSCAN 8
Super 8mm/8mm
Professional Real-Time Film-Scanner

"The FlashSCAN 8 has been developed to offer a truly professional method of scanning these formats in real-time, at a price that is cheaper than a Super 8mm gate on a traditional Telecine, whilst providing the same if not better results".

MWA scannerThe MWA FlashSCAN can handle 8mm/super8 film in black-white or color, reversal or negative, with or without sound. The FlashSCAN works with variable speeds between 3 and 25 frames per second. The machine is a 'field-scanner' which means that you do not get problems like a black/half-black frame when you start editing your work on a computer. The light source is made from LED's [in stead of halogen] and that gives a perfect balanced image without 'hotspot.'

It's not only the machine but also the man that operates it that determines the end results.

How it works [general conditions]

These conditions are valid for the new telecine service:

  • You can send films on separate small 50ft reels or on 1 large one as you wish.
  • Describe the service you wish as precise as you can: which video format [DVD] do you need, how many copies and so on.
  • Do not forget to mention your film speed [16 2/3, 18, 24 of 25 fps ?] Please remember that 18 fps = 3 minutes and 20 sec, 24 fps = 2 minutes and 40 sec for each 50ft roll of super8.
  • Mention the type of scanning: 'interlaced' or 'progressive' scanning. For your information: Interlaced scanning is the same as 'field scanning'. We advise this way of scanning when you have a lot of panoramic shots in your film and want a smooth movement. Progressive scanning means that every video frame [made from 2 fields] is filled with the same super8 frame. This means that the panoramic movement does not look so smooth, but it also means that if you edit the video on your own computer you will have better results.
  • All films are being checked on splices, dust, perforation damages and format.
  • After this they are being cleaned with PTR rollers.
  • The calculation of the scanning goes by the working/labour hour. The minimum calculation is 15 minutes.
  • Turn-a-round time is approximately 7 to 10 working days.
  • Delivery or shipping is done after receiving the full amount by bank transfer or cash only.
  • The general conditions of Cineco are also valid, please read them.
The laboratory thinks this is a most affordable way to digitize your precious super8 films.

Price We calculate this total scanning service by each working hour. For a price estimate see the table below. We always say that we need two time the length of your film to make a good transfer. Please mention the film speed when you ask for this service and send work to us. If you have a film that has many different scene's, scanning can take more time. Especially when you send Kodak Vision-2 color negative films we might need more time that two times the length of the film. Of course it is better to send in longer films because these are more affordable to transfer. The lab thinks that this complete service of editing, cleaning and scanning is a very high quality and cost saving service.

Tips There are many video formats that you can choose from. It's important to make the right choice. Think about your next step when the telecine is ready, ask yourself the question what you will do next? Are you going to edit the material on your own computer? Are you going to leave it like it is and just view it now and then? Do not forget to mention the type of scanning: 'interlaced' or 'progressive' scanning.
If you are going to load the material into your own computer to edit it with your own software it is better to choose miniDV or even DVcam. You better not go for DVD since this is a high compressed file. If you use miniDV or DVcam the capturing process will go more easy and you do not get much problems with compatibility of formats. If you work with professional edditing companies you might aslo choose DVcam or DigiBeta. If you don''t know what will work in your situation please ask the lab. Just explain the lab what you are going to do so the lab can give advise.
Second it is important to choose the right speed for transfers. Films shot at 18 frames per second can easily be transferred on the same speed. But films shot on 24 fps can better be transferred on 25 fps. The reason for this is that you get a smoother result. This has all to do with the way this MWA machine works.
